Daniel Craig bemused after trunks sold for eye-watering sum as Dench ‘banged the gavel’ | Films | Entertainment

Mr Craig appears on the first episode of The Graham Norton Show’s 29th series tonight at 10:35pm on BBC One. The actor will be joined on the chat show by Lea Seydoux, Lashana Lynch and Oscar winner Rami Malek, all of whom star in upcoming Bond film No Time To Die. Mr Craig will be reprising his role as Bond for the fifth and final time as a retired 007 is asked to help CIA agent and friend Felix Leiter search for abducted scientist Valdo Obruchev.

Yet the pair encounter a villain, played by Mr Malek, with a devastating plan that could see the death of millions.

No Time to Die is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga while among the writing team is Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The film premieres at the Royal Albert Hall on September 28, while it’s much awaited theatrical release is two days later.

Mr Craig has appeared on The Graham Norton Show numerous times, including alongside Judi Dench and Javier Bardem when he was promoting the critically acclaimed Bond film Skyfall in 2012.

On the show Mr Norton revealed that an auction of Bond memorabilia in support of several charities saw items such as the Aston Martin sell for £241,000 while a miniature replica model of the car went for £61,000.

A watch, worn by Mr Craig in the franchise, sold for £157,000 while the tiny blue swimming trunks worn in one of Casino Royale’s most iconic scenes, when Bond emerges dripping from the ocean, was also auctioned for £44,000.

Legendary actor Ms Dench revealed she had been put in charge of selling off the trunks.

She said: “They said, ‘would you bang the gavel on Daniel’s pants?’

The scene has since become iconic for inverting Bond girl Ursula Andress’ famous beach scene in Dr No.

Critics noted it was a marker of new modern Bond, while academic Lisa Funnell wrote in essay ‘I Know’: “Craig’s Bond […] is aligned with the Bond Girl character type more than with his Bond predecessors in the filmic franchise.”

Ms Funnell argued that Casino Royale placed emphasis on Mr Craig’s body in a way that had previously been applied to Bond Girls.

Yet on the Graham Norton Show Mr Craig revealed that the famous shot of 007 walking out of the water was “an accident”.

He said: “It happened by accident really.

“Where we were filming I was supposed to be swimming across [the water].

“And I was supposed to stand up and look around, but [it was one of the] places where the water stays the same depth for about a mile.

“So I kind of swam along, pretending to swim, and then stood up […] and that’s how the shot happened.”

Mr Norton joked: “I can see why they asked you to take your shirt off, and you’re very generous with your body.

“In Skyfall the laundry bill is very low ‒ you’re shirtless a lot.”
